Mrs Gardiner sheds light on the practical side of SEND provision, such as access arrangements during exams. Adjustments like extra time or supervised breaks are designed not to give unfair advantages, but to remove disadvantages and level the playing field. Transition processes are another vital part of the department’s work, ensuring pupils moving from Junior to Senior School — or joining from outside — are supported every step of the way.
In addition to describing the school’s ethos of inclusion, Mrs Gardiner also reflects on her personal journey. Having originally worked in finance, she discovered her passion for education and supporting children with SEND through volunteering. That initial spark led her back to university, into specialist teaching, and eventually to her current leadership role at Channing.
Channing School is a selective school, and the entry requirements depend on the age group. The school follows a “Fearless Learning” philosophy, meaning they look for potential and character as much as academic scores.
1. 4+ Entry (Junior School – Reception)
The 4+ assessment is designed to be low-stress and play-based.
Stage 1: A group observation where girls participate in activities like sharing, listening to a story, and following instructions. The school looks for kindness and the ability to collaborate.
Stage 2: A smaller group assessment focusing on early literacy and numeracy skills (identifying letters, simple counting).
The “Channing Twist”: They often include a creative group task, like a “joint craft project,” to see how well the children work together.
2. 11+ Entry (Senior School – Year 7)
Channing is a member of the London 11+ Consortium.
The Exam: A 100-minute bespoke online assessment. It is adaptive (questions get harder if you do well) and covers:
Maths (20 mins)
Non-Verbal Reasoning (10 mins)
English Comprehension (20 mins)
Verbal Reasoning (10 mins)
Puzzles & Problem Solving (15 mins)
Analysis/Creative Comprehension (25 mins)
The Interview: Unlike many schools that only interview top scorers, Channing interviews every applicant because they believe “everyone can have an off day” in an exam.
Reference: A strong confidential report from the current Headteacher is essential.
3. 16+ Entry (Sixth Form – Year 12)
Admission is based on GCSE performance and a formal interview.
General Requirement: At least 10 GCSEs with a majority at Grades 7–9.
Subject Requirements: * A Grade 7 is required in the subjects you wish to study at A-Level.
A Grade 8 is mandatory if you want to study Mathematics. A Grade 9 is required for Further Mathematics.
Interview: External applicants have a series of interviews with the Headmistress and the Head of Sixth Form to discuss their academic interests and future goals.
