Other Amenities

The vast majority of students follow the full curriculum. In very exceptional circumstances, some students are permitted a slight adjustment to/reduction of the curriculum, to allow for longer-term one to one support. This will only be put in place following close consultation with the Deputy Head Academic, teachers, the student themselves and their parents.

It sometimes becomes apparent that a student needs a formal assessment for SEND by an educational psychologist, or other specialists, so that their learning profile can be fully understood. A formal assessment is also a requirement for access arrangements in public examinations. As per the School’s Access Arrangements Policy, these are subject to the Examination Boards’ published regulations. In line with our Admissions Policy, the School permits access arrangements for entrance tests, provided there is valid and up to date evidence in the form of a formal report as above.

This outline should be read in conjunction with the School’s SEND and Academic Support Policy, with the Access Arrangements Policy and with the Admissions Policy found on the School Policies webpage.

Entry Requirements

Middle School Entry (13+ / Year 9)

Abingdon utilizes a deferred entry model for 13+ applicants.

  • Assessment Timeline: The core selection process occurs in Year 7 for those coming from external prep schools.
  • Assessments: Includes English, Mathematics, and Reasoning tests.
  • The “Abingdon Prep” Route: Pupils at Abingdon Prep School follow a continuous assessment model and may receive an offer as early as the end of Year 5, bypassing the external 13+ exam.

Sixth Form Entry (16+ / Year 12)

Entry is based on predicted GCSE performance and internal subject-specific assessments.

  • General Requirement: A minimum of six GCSEs at Grade 6 or above, with an average grade of at least 6 across all subjects.
  • Subject Specifics: A Grade 7 is required in the subjects intended for A Level study. Grade 8 is mandatory for those wishing to study Further Mathematics.
  • Assessment Day: Candidates sit a general cognitive paper and undergo interviews with relevant Heads of Department in November of Year 11.

International Applicant Requirements

Abingdon welcomes global applications, though specific visa and linguistic criteria apply.

  • Child Student Visas: The school cannot sponsor visas for 11+ (Year 7) entry. Boarding and visa sponsorship are only available from Year 9 (13+) onwards.
  • Linguistic Benchmarking: Non-native speakers must demonstrate a high level of English proficiency (indicative IELTS 5.5+ or equivalent) and may be required to sit a supplementary English Grammar paper.
  • UKiset: While the school has its own exams, international candidates often utilize UKiset profiles to support their initial application.
