Bede’s maintains a sophisticated and highly regarded Learning Enhancement Department, distinguished within the independent sector for its proactive and inclusive approach. Rather than classifying Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) as a remedial provision, the Trust adopts a progressive “Academic Enhancement” model.
This framework is strategically designed to empower neurodiverse learners, providing the specialized pedagogical support necessary to ensure they achieve academic parity with their peers and secure placements at premier global universities.
Bede’s Senior School (Upper Dicker) employs a holistic and progressive admissions philosophy, moving away from traditional high-pressure “pass/fail” entrance examinations. The process is strategically designed to identify students who demonstrate both academic potential and a genuine enthusiasm for the school’s extensive co-curricular and residential life.
Year 9 Entry (13+ Assessments)
The primary entry point is anchored by the Bede’s Experience Day (BE Day). Candidates attend the campus in small cohorts to participate in a series of collaborative tasks, group discussions, and a personal interview with a senior member of the leadership team. This qualitative assessment is supplemented by an online cognitive test to establish an academic baseline in verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Unlike rigid entrance exams, this day serves as a mutual evaluation of fit, focusing on the student’s character and interests.
Sixth Form Entry (16+)
Admissions for the Sixth Form are predicated on a combination of academic merit and professional interview performance. Candidates are typically required to secure a minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 6 or above for entry into the A Level programme, while the BTEC pathway generally requires five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above. Specialized subjects, particularly within the STEM disciplines, may necessitate higher grades (typically 7 or 8) in those specific areas. Applicants also undergo a formal interview with the Sixth Form leadership team to align their subject choices with future higher education aspirations.
General Requirements and International Candidates
All applicants must provide a confidential reference and the most recent two years of academic reports from their current institution. For international students, the school may utilize the UKiset assessment to determine English language proficiency and academic potential, ensuring that students are appropriately supported by the school’s English as an Additional Language (EAL) department from the outset.
Registration Deadlines
Formal registration is the mandatory first step for all prospective students.
Scholarship and Bursary Deadlines
Bede’s offers prestigious scholarships in Academics, Art, Dance (Legat Academy), Drama, Music, and Sport.
Pupils at Bede’s School are celebrating another record-breaking year of results, with an impressive 81% of grades at A* to B. A third of all grades were at the top A* level, and 62% were awarded A* or A, or its equivalent. This success comes in a year during which Bede’s was placed as the top performing independent school in Sussex for the government’s key Value Added measure at Key Stage 5 and in the top 3% in the country.
Bede’s Senior School is proud to announce another set of exceptional GCSE results this year, marking a strong year in academic achievements. Following on from the record A Level results last week, nearly half of all GCSE grades (45%) were at a 9-7 level, which is equivalent to an A*/A, matching last year’s record-breaking results.
This year’s impressive GCSE results extended across a wide range of subjects. In Physics and Chemistry, 41% of pupils achieved the very top grade 9, whilst over half of all pupils also achieved the equivalent of A* or A in English Literature. Over half of pupils in Economics (58%) and History (59%) achieved 9-7 grades, while 74% of Art pupils also scored 9-7 grades (the equivalent of A* or A).
